Naeem Khan loves bold color in his garments, made for the likes of Taylor Swift and Beyonce. But when it came to the fashion designer’s glassy Miami aerie, he went in the opposite direction.
“I’m so used to color in my fashion that I wanted something a little different,” he explains of the 3-bedroom space in the Entertainment District in the new issue of Wine Spectator, on newsstands January 30. “Sometimes having too much color around you can be overwhelming. White is an I-can-think color.”
The triplex already has its share of fond memories for the Mumbai native. During his first week in the apartment in 2009, the designer recounted to Architectural Digest, he was taking a shower when he heard the news on TV that Michelle Obama had worn one of his gowns to a state dinner. When he got out, he found a TV crew was already waiting for him downstairs. Recalling the experience, he notes, sometimes “the world lights up for you.”

The home, which Khan bought “totally on an impulse,” may be spare in color, but it’s far from modest. The space blends the Magic City’s stark modernism — “You just feel like you’re flying,” Khan says. “It’s like a glass box up in the sky.” — with his own flare for the extravagant.
The 4,500-square-foot home’s centerpiece is without a doubt, the glittering 11-foot chandelier dangling from the living room’s 20-foot ceilings. The designer had it made by the same artisans that made them for 19th-century palaces in his native India.
The consummate host and home chef also has only the finest in his kitchen. He stores 300 bottles of his 1,000-bottle wine and champagne collection — Krug Grande Cuvée is a favorite —at the property.
Khan has also owned homes in New York City and the Hamptons.
